Through the chronology of human development, it is well known that there were great advancements that were made by those people who had unique ideas, and questioned what others only saw as impenetrable walls. These people, who are many times called geniuses, have the capability to discern things beyond the ordinary worker and to see possibilities that are beyond the understanding of most people. But, first of all, what is genius and how does it liberate itself and override all stigmatized rules and patterns?

Defining Genius: In addition to intelligence and aptitude

People in general tend to interpret genius as simple, smart, gifted or talented people but it is not all about that. Whereas intelligence can be best described as one’s IQ score, talent may be expressed in the form of a skill, yet genius defies these metrics. The real genius with the combination of creativity, passion or zeal to get success and curiosity to acquire more and more knowledge of the chosen field.

Analyzing the suggested definition of geniuses, it can be stated that geniuses think differently; they are not bound to the traditional approach and are ready to take risks. It’s for them to create ideas that don’t exist but are capable of creating a reality out of them. Thus, having access to such different views they are capable of overcoming all sorts of boundaries – scientific, social, cultural, and even philosophical – and setting up new standards.

The Courage to Challenge Norms

Norms are the customs in our behavior, our societies, and in fact in our thinking processes. It gives a certain level of structure and the ability to predict the organization’s future but it can also become a set of immovable shackles that hinders research and advancement. Geniuses are people who are willing to defy such norms; to disrupt the processes; and to think of what they regard as possibilities that those who are less endowed mentally may consider highly improbable.

Take for instance the case of scientific brilliance of Albert Einstein. When he introduced his theory of relativity, he was questioning the Newtonian phase of physics that had for long dominated society. These ideas changed the perspective of the scientific community and most of his ideas were viewed skeptically at first. But thanks to Einstein’s rebellious nature the thoughts formed about the universe were revolutionized.

Similarly, in the technology world, Steve Jobs was a genius that revolutionized the possibilities of design and usability. Judd also questioned the idea of functionalism and said that technology could not be aesthetically unsophisticated. As seen via his insight, Apple changed the norms of the personal computing, music and mobile technology realms.

Breaking Barriers: Persistence and Failure

However, an individual’s genius is not just an individual’s capacity for breakthroughs. These breakthroughs come not out of insignificance of a minute example. These may very well be the result of serious work and determination coupled with the desire to learn from failure over a period of several years.

Second, another genius like Newton is Thomas Edison who said “I have not failed. ‘I have just found 10 thousand ways that will not work”. Edison did not stop inventing no matter how many times he was defeated until he invented the electric light bulb which has changed the world. His story proves that in order to overcome barriers one does not only have to be intelligent but determined as well.

The Ripple Effect: Changing paradigm for future generations

When a genius goes over a hurdle or when they solve a problem, they do so in a way that affects not only the subject in question, or the discipline that employs them but many others. These new ideas or technologies or thinking patterns can actually alter people’s perceptions of what can be achieved and therefore form new paradigms for the next generation.

For instance the efforts of Marie Curie in radioactivity not only produced two Nobel winners but also led to numerous innovations in medicine, physics as well as chemistry among other disciples. Her research turned conventional understanding of her time on its head, especially the idea that women could not make any meaningful input to intellectual pursuits. There is no doubt that Curie remains an icon that today’s generations of female scientists can emulate especially in the fields considered masculine.

The Paradox of Genius: Championing the Paradox

Some of the things which are usually associated with genius are the seemingly absurd, the strange or even the terribly embarrassing. Intelligence is not afraid of taking risks, to go where no man dares to go and to challenge the norms of the society. The ability to be different, to accept misunderstanding, and criticism is what makes them set new barriers to what is perceived as normal.

But this also implies that people who are considered geniuses will have ideas and concepts which are not understood for a long time, probably even a number of years or decades. A painter like Vincent van Gogh, for example, was not very famous by any means in the course of his lifetime, but now the artist is one of the most acclaimed in the history of mankind. He was a genius because he painted in a way that was totally revolutionary to the art from his time and the effects of his work are still felt today.

Conclusion:

The true meaning of the word ‘genius,” therefore, refers to the ability to choose an alternative path instead of following society standards. It is about changing the social paradigms which shape our communities and societies and the roles and possibilities they offer. It is these geniuses who have given their souls to unleash the potential, who not only changed their spheres of activity but also set the references for the further generations.

As a play located in the organized societies where conformity and obedience to norms is cherished, the unleashing of genius is therefore symbolic of creativity, hard work and courage to stand out from a crowd of conformists. In such a world, as we proceed to the twenty-first century, we still are experiencing increasingly intricate difficulties; it is the men who have the genius to transcend the boundaries and terms and conditions set by the society to dictate the future course for the benefit of many people.
